At Monash School, our Kitchen Garden Program is called "Dirt to Dish".
The guiding philosophy is that all children from Preschool to Year 6 are given the opportunity to participate in a guided cooking program in our purpose built kitchen/garden facilities, with the objective of fostering an early understanding of where our food comes from and why we eat different foods to fuel our bodies. We closely follow the guidelines set out by Nutrition Australia when selecting recipes to cook.
The focus is always on fun. The children learn how to grow, prepare and enjoy good, healthy and delicious food from garden to plate. They often follow the progress of many of the ingredients literally from the ground up!
Each term the menu changes to reflect the changing seasons, giving the children an early understanding of why we grow certain foods at certain times of the year and what this means when thinking about what to eat.
We prepare a range of recipes, both sweet and savoury, always focusing on simple, fresh and affordable ingredients. The children learn which foods help to nourish growing bodies and brains. All recipes are shared in the school newsletter, while parents/carers are kept up to date with what the children are cooking and growing each week.
